Is Poor Air Quality Making Your Home Sick?

The average American spends about 90 percent of their time inside, according to the EPA, and the agency says exposure to indoor air pollutants ranks as one of the top environmental risks to public health. Are you living in poor air quality? Learn more about the causes and symptoms and take action for your health!

Causes & Symptoms of Poor Air Quality

Negative Air Pressure

Negative Pressure is created in a house that lacks fresh air.  Too much air leaving the house and not enough replacement air entering it causes negative pressure.  Negative Pressure was discovered after the energy crisis in the 70’s, when houses were built to be more energy efficient.

Sick Building Syndrome (SBS)

Poor indoor air quality is a symptom of Sick Building Syndrome, or SBS.  In 1984, a report by the World Health Organization suggested that up to 30% of new and remodeled buildings worldwide may be affected by SBS.

Symptoms

Typical Symptoms of an Energy Efficient Airtight House:

  • Mold
  • Mildew
  • Moisture (as well as condensation on widows or walls)
  • Lack of fresh air
  • Moldy smell
  • Stagnant, stale, heavy air (high humidity)
  • Rush of air when opening an exterior door

These issues affect houses – and can affect your health as well.
